The Bruce Eckrote Memorial Fund was established in 2010 to honor Bruce Eckrote who passed away suddenly from cancer in December 2009. The fund is managed by his family along with input from the local community. The Bruce Eckrote Memorial Fund is an officially recognized non-profit organization by the State of New Jersey.
In its first five years of existence the fund has raised over $65,000, with 100% of the proceeds benefiting the community and causes. The main source of financial support comes from the annual Born to Run 5K event, a run/walk that takes place every summer around Packanack Lake in Wayne, NJ, and retraces the 3+ mile course that Bruce ran several times a week.
The fund supports causes that were important and true to Bruce’s beliefs, such as:
- Local causes including Steven Domalewski’s ongoing recovery, Friends of Carol Mango, Hurricane Irene flood relief
- Two scholarships ($1,500 each) given annually to graduating seniors at both Wayne Valley and Wayne Hills high schools
- Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center to support research of early detection of gastrointestinal cancers
